Difference Between Orbit and Orbital

ORBIT
ORBITAL
It is well-defined circular path followed by electron around nucleus. It is a region of space around the nucleus where the probability of finding an electron is maximum.
It represents two dimensional motion of electron around nucleus. It represents three dimensional motion of electron around nucleus.
The maximum no. of electrons in an orbit is 2n2. The maximum no. of electrons in an orbital is 2.
Orbit is circular in shape. Orbitals have different shapes.

    3. Each orbital holds 2 electrons. Each sublevel has a different number of orbitals. So the number of electrons in a sublevel are equal to # of orbitals x 2. P: 3 orbitals. Each holding 2 electrons, so 3x2 = 6 total electrons in sublevel p.

      in 1st orbit n is 1 and hence it can hold 2 electrons
      in 2nd orbit n is 2 and hence it can hold 8 electrons
      the same way,
      3rd orbit n=3 electrons=18
      4th orbit n=4 electrons=32 and so on.....
